We are pleased to present the first in our series of explainer videos highlighting the innovative use cases developed within Project UNICORN.
Use Case 1: Composite Smart Battery Casing with Embedded Temperature and Strain Monitoring
Led by Valeo in collaboration with CEA, this solution introduces a new approach to enhancing electric vehicle (EV) battery systems by integrating printed sensors into lightweight composite casings. The aim is to significantly improve battery safety, performance, and sustainability.
Key Functionalities:
- Real-time temperature monitoring of the dielectric coolant using printed sensor technology
- Strain monitoring to detect structural impacts and ensure casing integrity
Designed with Circularity in Mind:
- Use of lightweight composite materials to lower CO₂ emissions
- Efficient one-shot manufacturing process that minimizes material waste
- Enables predictive maintenance, contributing to longer battery life and potential for reuse
This approach supports the development of lighter, smarter, and more environmentally responsible battery systems—with applications that extend well beyond the automotive sector.
