Project UNICORN – Use Case 2: Sustainable Functional In-Mould Electronics for Automotive Dashboard

Discover UNICORN’s Use Case 2 – Sustainable, Functional In-Mould Electronics for Automotive Dashboard

Led by CEA and developed in collaboration with FORVIA and SYMBIOSE SE2D, UC2 aims to transform the dashboard by introducing a new generation of lightweight, 3D-formed interfaces—crafted from bio-based materials and hybrid printed electronics—to enable seamless and sustainable Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).

Key functionalities:

  • Integrated sensing, lighting, and actuating functionalities for visual, acoustic and haptic feedback
  • Ergonomic 3D shapes for intuitive and seamless control • Printed and hybrid electronics for flexible, large-area, cost-efficient production

Circularity at the core:

  • Substituting petroleum-based materials by lower impact and light-weight alternatives – bio-based polycarbonates, recycled PET films
  • Efficient, low-impact processes – screen printing, thermoforming, injection molding
  • Compliance with the EU Eco-design directive, maximizing product lifespan and recyclability
