Project UNICORN – Use Case 4 – Enabling Smarter Tyres through Embedded, Sustainable RFID

Meet the fourth use case of Project UNICORN, where smart mobility meets circular design. Developed by Continental and VTT focuses on developing embedded RFID solutions for tyres, enabling real-time monitoring, extended lifecycle, and improved end-of-life recycling.

With an estimated 3–5 billion tyres entering the market annually, creating systems that can track, sense, and communicate tyre data is crucial—not just for efficiency and safety, but also for reducing environmental impact.

Key functionalities:

• Embedded temperature and pressure sensing within the tyre structure
• RFID-based identification and communication with digital tyre management systems
• Energy-efficient additive manufacturing using copper inks and bio-based substrates

Circularity at the Core:

• Use of bio-based PI and nanocellulose substrates to replace fossil-based materials
• Printed electronics and bonding techniques designed for extreme operational conditions
• Enables accurate tyre tracking and improved recycling through embedded identification
