Project UNICORN – Use Case 5 – Functional Electronics for Smarter Mobility Services

Introducing UNICORN’s 5th Use Case: Functional Electronics for Smarter Mobility Services

As cities face increasing pressure from climate targets and urban congestion, rethinking how we move becomes essential. Use Case 5 (UC5) of the UNICORN Project dives into innovative mobility concepts, exploring how functional electronics can transform urban transport into something smarter, more efficient, and truly circular.

Led by project partners VDIVDE-IT and VITO, UC5 connects pressing societal needs with cutting-edge technologies. The focus? Enabling Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) and mobility-on-demand models through integrated, adaptable electronic systems that support a new generation of urban mobility.

Core Functionalities Driving Innovation:

• Smart sensing & signalling for real-time responsiveness
• Advanced communication & computing to coordinate dynamic fleets
• Lightweight, energy-efficient electronics tailored for modular, scalable use

Circularity at the Heart of UC5:

• Extending vehicle life cycles and boosting utilisation
• Enabling flexible, on-demand transport like ride-hailing and carpooling
• Tackling inefficiency—today’s cars sit idle up to 92% of the time

By embedding functional electronics into the next wave of vehicle systems, UC5 aims to unlock more agile, shared, and sustainable transport solutions—with lower environmental impact and greater system resilience.
